The Bill I Cannot PayPsalm 4:8

I Paid It And I Have Not Slept

This message is for a man who paid the repair in full nine days ago and has lain awake every night since watching the account, who needs to stop paying that bill again every night

Rafa paid it on the ninth. In full, in one go, on a Tuesday.

He did not want to. It emptied the thing he had been building since the spring and it left a number in that account that he has not seen since he was twenty six. But the car is the job, and the job is the household, and there was no version of it where he did not pay.

So he paid it, and he drove home, and he told his wife it was done, and she said good, and that was that.

That was nine days ago and he has slept properly one night since.

Here is what a night looks like now.

He goes to bed at eleven. He is tired, genuinely, the tiredness of a man who works. He goes down quickly. Then at some point between one and three he is awake, completely, no drifting, like a switch.

And what he does then is the part worth looking at.

He gets his phone and he opens the account and he looks at the number.

He already knows the number. He knew it before he went to bed. It has not changed and it is not going to change until Friday. He looks at it anyway, and then he lies there and does arithmetic he has already done, and then he does the arithmetic for October which cannot be done yet because it depends on things nobody knows, and at about four he stops and gets an hour and a half before the alarm.

Nine nights of that.

Now, the bill is paid. That is the strange center of this whole thing. The transaction closed on the ninth. There is nothing outstanding. Nobody is waiting on Rafa for anything.

And he is paying it again, in full, every night at two in the morning.

His wife said on the weekend, "You paid it. It's done."

And Rafa said, "I know."

And she said, "Do you?"

The transaction closed and the account did not

Let me put down what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.

I am not going to tell you the money will be replaced. Nobody honest can promise that. I am not going to suggest that a particular prayer refills an account, because that is a lie about God and it lands hardest on the people with the least. And I am not going to explain a man's own sleep to him, because I am not a doctor, and nine nights of this is worth mentioning to one, plainly, without embarrassment, the same way anything on that car goes to somebody qualified rather than getting guessed at.

And one plain thing first. Money trouble takes some people somewhere much darker than an empty account. If it has gone there, if there are thoughts in it about not being here, tell somebody today: a wife, a friend, a doctor, or the 988 crisis line for anyone in the United States. That is not a detour from this message. It is the most important line in it.

What I want to look at is the two in the morning.

Because there are two accounts in this story and only one of them has been settled.

The first is the one at the bank. That closed on the ninth. It is done, correctly, in full, by a man who did the right thing and did it fast.

You are not carrying an open account, and Scripture describes a handwriting that stood against a person being taken out of the way entirely. Colossians 2 has the record blotted out and nailed up rather than reduced or rescheduled, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a closed account stay closed at two in the morning.

The second is somewhere behind his ribs, and it did not close, and every night it opens again and demands the same payment.

Now here is the verse, and the two verbs in it are worth slowing down for.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8

Two separate things. Lay me down. And then: sleep.

David separates them because they are separate. A man can lie down without sleeping. Nine nights of it, in fact. And the psalm treats both of them as things that come from the same source, and it names the source explicitly, and the source is not the state of anybody's circumstances.

For thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

Only. Not mainly. Not in addition to a decent balance. The safety a man actually dwells in comes from one place, and it is not the number on a phone at two in the morning.

You are not unsafe, and Scripture puts the dwelling in safety with God alone rather than with what is in an account. It is written that I will both lay me down in peace and sleep for thou Lord only makest me dwell in safety, which names one source and rules out the others, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a bedroom at two in the morning.

You have been kept every one of these nine nights, including the ones spent looking at a phone. Psalm 4 has the keeping done by God rather than by the man lying down, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a thing to lean the whole weight of a night against.

Checking is not the same as watching over

Here is the practical thing, and it is about what the phone is doing.

At two in the morning, opening that account feels like vigilance. It feels like a man taking responsibility, staying on top of it, not letting anything creep up on him.

But look at what is actually happening. The number cannot change. Nothing can be done at two. No action is available and no information is new. What is being performed is the posture of guarding, with none of the function.

And guarding is exactly what the psalm takes off him. Thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. The watch is already being kept. Rafa has been standing an extra shift on a wall that already has somebody on it.

You are not on duty at two in the morning, and no part of the written word assigns a man the night watch over his own household. Psalm 4 gives the keeping to God alone and the lying down to the man, and the Spirit of God is what makes that division of labor real rather than aspirational.

And I want to say the tender half, because the checking is not really about money.

Emptying that account did not just cost a figure. It cost a feeling that had taken since the spring to build, which is the feeling of having a margin. And a man who has a margin sleeps differently from a man who does not, and that is not greed, that is just what a margin is for.

So what wakes him at two is not the number. It is the absence of a cushion he had got used to leaning on, and the body noticing that it is gone.

You were never keeping that household safe by having a margin, and Scripture puts the safety somewhere no month can reach. It is written that the Lord only maketh me dwell in safety, which was true in the spring when the account was full and is true now, and His Spirit is what makes that continuity something a man can feel at two in the morning.

The breakthrough

So here is what tonight asks, and it is one word on a piece of paper.

It does not ask you to feel differently at two in the morning. It does not ask you to stop worrying about October, or refill anything, or explain nine nights to your wife.

It asks you to close the second account in a way you can see.

You are able to mark this as finished, and Scripture puts both the lying down and the sleeping on the same source rather than on a balance. Psalm 4 says I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, and the Spirit He has given is what makes a receipt in a drawer an act of agreement with what is already true.

You were doing the right thing on the ninth and you were quick about it, and nine nights of two in the morning has never once been a report on that. It is written that a good man is gracious and lends and guides his affairs with discretion, which is Psalm 112 describing a man who handles things well, and the same Spirit who inspired it is speaking that over a man who paid in full on a Tuesday.

You have been kept in safety every night since the spring, and the account being full was never what was doing it. The written word gives that keeping to God only, and His Spirit is what makes that as true tonight as it was in April.

What October holds, and how the margin gets rebuilt, is not mine to promise and I will not. What tonight settles is whether a paid bill goes on collecting at two in the morning.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the kitchen with the drawer shut, or in the dark at two if that is where you are. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He has been the one keeping that household in safety since long before the spring. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What October holds, and how any margin gets rebuilt, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Bill I settled nine days ago, you are paid and you were never still owing. Psalm 4 says I will both lay me down in peace and sleep for thou Lord only makest me dwell in safety, and by the Holy Spirit I am agreeing that one transaction closed on the ninth and there is nothing outstanding.
  2. Night watch I have been standing, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord only maketh me dwell in safety, so there is already somebody on that wall and I have been working an extra shift, and His Spirit is saying that over me right now.
  3. Father, You put the lying down and the sleeping on the same source and named it as Yourself alone, and Psalm 4 is where You had it written down. I thank You that the safety I have been in did not come out of an account, and by Your Spirit I am marking that receipt paid tonight and shutting the drawer.
