I Paid For Something I Could Have Checked

It was in March, and Tanya has thought about it more than any reasonable person should think about a thing like this.

She went in about one matter. The man at the counter came back and told her about a second matter, and used a word she did not know, and she said fine, and it was added, and she paid it, and she drove away.

Six weeks later, in a break room at work, a colleague was talking about her own car and mentioned that same word, and Tanya asked what it was.

And it turned out to be a thing a person can look at, standing beside their own car, in about a minute, using nothing but their eyes.

Now. Nothing dishonest happened here. I want that established before anything else, because Tanya's mind has gone to a bad place about it and I am not going to help it get there.

The man at the counter told her about a real thing. It probably did need doing. Nobody lied and nobody overcharged and nobody took advantage. The whole transaction was, as far as anybody can tell, entirely proper.

What happened is that Tanya paid for the doing of it without ever having the option of the knowing about it, because she did not have the one minute of information that would have let her stand there and look for herself first.

And the money is not the part that has stayed with her.

What has stayed with her is a picture. Her, at that counter, saying fine. And in the picture she is not a woman being sensible about a car. In the picture she is a person who can be told anything.

That picture has been running since May, and it has had one very specific effect: she has not been back, and she has not learned anything, and she has not asked anybody a question about that car, because every one of those actions leads back through the counter in March.

Her colleague, who meant nothing by it, said, "Oh, you can just look at that yourself, it takes a second."

And Tanya said, "Right."

And then she went and sat in her car at lunch and did not eat.

The money bought a thing and the picture bought nothing

Let me say what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.

I am not going to tell you what that word meant or what you should have checked, because I have not seen your car and I am not going to be the second person to hand you a term. And I am absolutely not going to suggest that anybody at that counter did wrong, because there is no evidence of that and this site does not trade on suspicion of people who work with their hands.

What I want to do is take the picture away from you, because the picture is not true and it has been charging rent since May.

Here is the verse.

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?Isaiah 43:18-19

Now, that is God speaking to a people with a great deal of history behind them, some of it their own fault and some of it not, and He does something in that sentence that people rush past.

He does not tell them the former things did not happen. He does not say they were fine. He tells them not to carry them, and He gives a reason, and the reason is that His attention has moved to something new.

That is the whole architecture. The instruction to stop looking backward is not a denial. It is a redirection, and it is issued on the authority of what He is already doing.

You are not a person who can be told anything, and Scripture instructs the remembering to stop because His attention has already moved on. It is written to remember not the former things and behold He is doing a new thing, which puts the reason for setting a thing down in what He is doing rather than in whether it hurt, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a genuine permission in an ordinary week.

You have been carrying March since May, and the passage takes that specific work off a person by name. Isaiah 43 says do not consider the things of old, which is an instruction rather than a suggestion, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an old word about a nation land on a woman in a break room.

What was actually missing was one minute

Here is the part I want to hand you, and it changes the picture entirely.

Look at what was actually absent at that counter in March. It was not sense. It was not judgment. It was not backbone.

It was one minute of information that nobody had ever given you.

That is all. A minute. Somebody could have shown you at nineteen and did not, and so at thirty four you stood at a counter without it, and a person without a minute of information is not a fool. They are a person who was never shown.

And the difference between those two things is enormous, because one of them is a fact about your character and the other one is a fact about your history, and only one of them can be changed this week.

You were never shown, and that is a completely different thing from being unable, and the written word never once treats a gap in teaching as a fault in the taught. Isaiah 43 opens with God calling a people by name and saying they are His before it says anything about their record, and the Spirit of God is what puts that order back in place for a woman in a parking lot at lunchtime.

Now the harder half, and I will say it plain because you would smell it if I softened it.

The picture has been protecting something. As long as a woman is somebody who gets told anything, the sensible response is to stay away from counters, and staying away from counters means never being in that room again. The picture costs you learning and it buys you not having to go back.

That is a real trade and it has been running for four months and it is worth naming out loud.

You have been avoiding a room rather than avoiding a subject, and the passage puts the new thing in front rather than behind. Isaiah 43 has the new thing springing forth now rather than after a person has recovered, and His Spirit is what makes going back into an ordinary room a step into that rather than a return to the old one.
