It Is Not The Change, It Is The Paperwork

Ask Dwight whether he is attached to that truck and he will laugh at you.

He is not. He has had it eleven years and he would part with it tomorrow without a flicker. There is no sentiment in this at all, which is what makes it different from most of what gets written about old vehicles.

He simply cannot face the week.

And when he says the week, he means a specific thing, and if you got him to list it out loud it would go something like this.

Working out what it is worth, which means looking at things and not knowing which of them to believe. Then finding somewhere to sell it, or working out whether a place would take it in part. Then the money question, which means either the bank or a form, and either way it means somebody at a desk asking about a business that had two bad years.

Then the looking. Which is evenings. Which is a thing he would be doing after ten hours of work, badly, on a phone.

Then whatever happens with the title and the plates and the insurance, which he has done before and which is genuinely not hard and which he has nonetheless assigned a whole day to in his head.

That is what he is looking at. And the whole of it, in his imagination, arrives at once, as one solid week with nothing else in it.

And he does not have a week. Nobody has a week. So it does not start.

Eleven years and about eighteen months of not starting.

His wife said in the summer, "You keep saying you don't even like it."

And Dwight said, "I don't."

And she said, "So what is it?"

And he said, "It's the whole business of it."

And she said, "Right," and that was true and neither of them could do anything with it.

The week does not exist, and it is stopping everything

Let me put down what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.

I am not going to tell you to change the truck. That is yours, and it might well be right to keep it, and I have no numbers.

And I am not going to walk you through what any of it involves, because I do not know your state or your bank or your situation, and a man handing out administrative advice from a distance is worth nothing.

What I want to look at is the week, because the week is doing all the work and it does not exist.

You are not behind on anything God is counting, and Scripture puts the ordering of a man's steps in His hands. Psalm 37 says the steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, which is an ordering that runs whether or not a week was ever cleared for it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that true of a job that has been waiting for a Saturday that never comes.

Here is the verse, and it is one of the most practical sentences in the whole book.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.Ecclesiastes 9:10

Now look at what it takes as the unit.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do. Not: whatever the whole project turns out to require. Not: the season of work ahead of you. What your hand finds. Which is the thing in front of you, now, within reach.

That is a very small unit and it is chosen deliberately, because the preacher who wrote it has spent eleven chapters observing that people cannot see what is coming and should stop trying to plan a life they have no visibility of.

And into that he puts this. Do the thing in your hand. With your might, which means properly rather than half. And then, presumably, find the next one.

It is not a small ambition. It is the only unit anybody actually has.

You are not avoiding a change, and Scripture puts the unit of work at what a hand finds rather than at what a project requires. It is written whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, which sets the size of the task at what is in reach, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a practical fact about an evening in September.

You have been trying to lift a week that was never going to be lifted in one piece. Ecclesiastes 9 gives the hand's reach as the measure rather than the whole of a thing, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that permission real for a tired man after ten hours.

Ten minutes, and only the first ten

Here is the practical thing, and the number matters.

Ten minutes. Tonight. And only the first ten minutes of it, whatever they actually turn out to be.

Not the week. Not a plan for the week. Not a list of everything the week contains, because a list of everything the week contains is just the week again on paper and it will do the same thing to him.

The first ten minutes.

That might be finding the title and putting it on the kitchen table. It might be one search on a phone with the model and the year in it, and then stopping. It might be a text to the mechanic who does his tires asking what he thinks it is worth, which is ninety seconds and would answer a question that has been sitting there since spring.

Whatever the actual first thing is, do it, and then stop, and do not do the second thing.

Stopping is not laziness here. Stopping is the whole method. Because the reason eighteen months have gone by is that every time Dwight approaches this, the entire week arrives with it, and if he does ten minutes and then keeps going, the week arrives again and he stops for another month.

Ten minutes, then out. Then the same tomorrow, or not tomorrow, whenever.

You have permission to do a thing in pieces, and no verse anywhere requires a man to see the end of a project before he starts it. Ecclesiastes 9 puts the doing at the reach of a hand, and the Spirit of God is what makes ten minutes with a title on a table a complete act rather than a token.

And I want to say the honest half, because there is one thing under this that is not about administration.

Somewhere in that week is a conversation about money with a person at a desk, and that person is going to look at two bad years.

That is the one item on the list with a face attached, and it is not the same kind of thing as finding a title, and pretending it is would be dishonest of me.

But notice what has happened. That one item has spread its weight across all the others, so that finding a piece of paper in a drawer now costs what a conversation about a business costs, and it does not.

You were never dreading paperwork, and Scripture never once treats a hard conversation as a reason a small task cannot be done. Ecclesiastes 9 puts the doing in the hand rather than in the whole of what a thing might require, and His Spirit is what separates a drawer from a desk.
