The Conversation I DreadRomans 12:2

Ten Years And I Still Hear That Tone

This message is for a woman who was spoken to like a child at a counter ten years ago and has walked into every garage since expecting it again, who needs to walk in once without that old room in her

It was 2015 and it lasted about forty seconds and Ceri can still hear the exact pitch of it.

She had asked something. She does not remember what. And the man behind the counter had answered her the way an adult answers a child who has asked why the sky is blue: slowly, kindly, with a small smile, using words of one syllable, while looking slightly past her at the man behind her in the line.

Nothing hostile happened. He was not rude. He was, in his own understanding, being helpful.

And Ceri walked out and sat in the car and felt about eleven years old.

She has been to garages perhaps nineteen times in the ten years since.

And every single time, she has walked in already braced. Not consciously. Her shoulders do something in the doorway. Her voice comes out about a quarter tone higher than it is. She has a sentence prepared that is slightly too technical, which she has assembled beforehand, and which is there to establish something before anybody says anything.

Here is the part that makes this worth a whole message.

Almost none of those nineteen visits went badly.

She has been served by decent people, mostly, doing their jobs, with no particular tone in their voices at all. She could name maybe two that were less than fine.

But she does not arrive in those rooms. She arrives in 2015. And a woman who walks in already braced, with a prepared sentence and a voice a quarter tone up, is a woman who is having a slightly different conversation from everybody else in the building.

Her husband said last year, after one of them, "That went well, didn't it?"

And Ceri said, "He was alright."

And her husband said, "He was really nice, love."

And she said, "Yeah," and did not know what to do with that.

Nineteen rooms, and she has been in one of them

Let me put down what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.

I am not going to tell you that man in 2015 was fine. He was not. Speaking to an adult like a child is a real thing and it does real damage and I am not going to explain it away.

And I am not going to tell you to give people the benefit of the doubt, because that is advice, and advice does not reach the place this lives in.

What I want to look at is the nineteen.

Because that is the strange and hopeful arithmetic here. Ten years of evidence has been arriving, most of it good, and none of it has been able to get in.

You have ten years of good evidence that was never lost, only unopened, and Scripture says His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3 has the supply arriving daily and independent of whether the previous day's was noticed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a decade of mornings a woman could not take in.

Now here is the verse, and I want you to notice what kind of sentence it is.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.Romans 12:2

Be ye transformed. That is passive. It is a thing done to a person.

Paul does not say transform yourself. He does not say try harder to think differently, or decide to see people more generously. He puts the verb in a form where the subject is being acted upon.

And then he names the mechanism: the renewing of your mind. Which is also not something a person does with effort. A mind gets renewed the way a room gets redecorated. Something is taken out and something is put in, and it happens over time, and the room does not do it to itself.

So this is not an instruction to be braver in a doorway. It is a description of something God undertakes.

You are not being asked to fix the way you walk into a room, and Scripture puts the transforming in a form where it is done to a person rather than achieved by them. It is written be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, which is passive and describes something undertaken rather than attempted, and His Spirit is the one who makes that the actual arrangement rather than the hoped for one.

You have a mind that is being renewed whether or not it has felt like it across nineteen visits. Romans 12 puts the renewing as a process rather than a decision, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a work already underway rather than one waiting on a woman's resolve.

Say where you are, out loud, before you go in

Here is the practical thing, and it is small and it is slightly strange and it works.

Before you get out of the car, say out loud where you actually are.

Not a pep talk. Not an affirmation. Just the plain factual location, in an ordinary voice.

It is Tuesday. This is the place on the corner. It is 2025. I have not met this person.

Four sentences. Nine seconds.

Because here is what is happening in that doorway. A room from 2015 is being brought into a building in 2025, and it comes in unannounced, and it is not labeled, and so it feels like information about the present.

Saying the actual facts out loud does not banish it. It labels it. It puts a date on the old room, and a thing with a date on it stops passing itself off as now.

And then, when you go in, do one more thing: look at the person's face while they talk.

Not to assess them. Just to be in the room where they are, rather than in the one that came with you.

You have permission to name where you are, and no verse anywhere asks a person to overcome a memory by force. Romans 12 sets the renewing against being conformed, which is a matter of what a mind is shaped by rather than what it can resist, and the Spirit of God is what makes four factual sentences an act of agreement with that.

And I want to say the hard, kind half.

Ceri has lost something across those nineteen visits, and it is not the visits. It is that she has never once been able to enjoy a room going well.

Her husband said he was really nice, love, and she could not receive it, because the woman who walked in was braced and the woman who walked out was still braced, and there was no moment in between where a kind man could actually land.

That is the real cost. Not the bad room in 2015. The eighteen good ones that could not get through.

You were never getting the good ones, and Scripture puts the renewing exactly where that blockage sits. It is written that we are transformed by the renewing of the mind, which is Romans 12 aiming at the place where the incoming gets sorted, and His Spirit is what makes eighteen good rooms retrospectively available.

The breakthrough

So here is what next time asks, and it is nine seconds in a car.

It does not ask you to forgive the man from 2015. It does not ask you to stop bracing, or to feel differently in the doorway, or to trust anybody.

It asks you to say out loud where you actually are before you go in.

You are able to name the present out loud, and Scripture puts the renewing of a mind in God's hands rather than in a woman's resolve. Romans 12 says be ye transformed, which is a thing done to a person, and the Spirit He has given is what makes four factual sentences a real agreement with that work.

You have walked into nineteen rooms carrying something heavy and come out of every one of them upright. It is written that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, which is Psalm 34 stating where He stands rather than offering to arrive, and the same Spirit who inspired it is speaking that over a woman in a car in 2015.

You have eighteen good rooms behind you that never got in, and the renewing is aimed at exactly that door. The written word puts the transforming in the passive voice on purpose, and His Spirit is what makes a mind something being worked on rather than something to be managed.

What that car needs belongs to somebody qualified with it in front of them. What next time settles is whether a forty second exchange from 2015 goes on attending every appointment.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the car with the engine off, or in the kitchen with the back door open. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and the renewing has been underway since long before any of the nineteen. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What that car needs, and how any room goes, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Room from ten years ago, you are a memory and you were never in the building with me. Romans 12 says be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and by the Holy Spirit I am agreeing that the transforming is a work done to a person rather than a thing they achieve in a doorway.
  2. Bracing I do before I get out of the car, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, so a woman in a car in 2015 was accompanied and is accompanied now, and His Spirit is saying that over me right now.
  3. Father, You put the transforming in the passive voice on purpose, and Romans 12 is where You had it written down. I thank You that eighteen good rooms are not lost and the renewing is aimed at the very door they could not get through, and by Your Spirit I am saying where I am out loud before I go in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
