It Stopped, So I Decided It Was Fixed

The noise arrived on the twenty sixth of May. Dov remembers because it was the day of his nephew's ceremony and he was already late.

It ran for about six weeks. Not loud. A kind of dry ticking at low speeds that he could hear when he pulled into the driveway and shut the engine off, in the two seconds before everything settled.

Then, in the second week of July, it stopped.

Now I want to walk through what happened in that man's head over the following four days, because it is a beautifully constructed thing and almost none of it was conscious.

Day one, he noticed it was gone and thought: huh.

Day two, he listened for it on purpose, and it was not there, and he felt a small lift.

Day three, he did not listen for it, and by the end of the day he had a general sense that the car was in better shape than it had been.

Day four, he told his wife the car had sorted itself out. He used those words. It sorted itself out.

And within about a week that sentence had become a settled fact in that household. It was mentioned once more, in passing, in August, and both of them treated it as history.

The noise came back on the ninth of September. It came back the same and it has been running ever since.

And here is the thing Dov cannot quite get past, and the reason this is worth a whole message rather than a shrug.

He is not upset about the noise. He is upset about how quickly and how completely he built a conclusion out of nothing, and how comfortable he was inside it, and how little it took.

Two weeks of quiet. That is all it took. Two weeks of absolutely no information whatsoever, which he read as good news, because a thing not happening feels enormously like a thing being over.

His brother, who is blunt, said on the phone in September, "So what did they say when you took it in?"

And Dov said, "I didn't take it in. It stopped."

And his brother said, "It stopped."

And Dov said, "Yes."

And his brother did not say anything at all, which was worse.

A silence is not a report

Let me put down what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.

I am not going to guess what that ticking is. I have not been near the car and I have no standing to guess, and a man at a distance offering a diagnosis is doing damage dressed as help. And if that car ever does anything at all that feels wrong under your hands, this whole message steps aside and it goes to somebody qualified this week.

What I want to look at is the two weeks.

Because there is a line in Jeremiah about this exact mechanism, and I want to be very careful about how I use it, so let me say the guard first.

Jeremiah is speaking about prophets and priests who were telling a nation everything was well when it was not. It is a serious passage about serious people. A ticking noise in a driveway is not that, and I am not putting a car repair into a category that belongs to the moral life of a nation. Nobody sinned here. What I am borrowing is the picture, and the picture is exact.

They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.Jeremiah 6:14

Healed slightly. That is the phrase, and in the older sense it means healed superficially. Treated at the surface. The word covers a wound dressed on the outside while the thing underneath goes on.

And notice how the false peace arrives. Not as a lie somebody told. As a word spoken over a quiet: peace, peace. Which is exactly the sentence a man says on day four when a noise has been absent for a while.

You are not a foolish man, and Scripture takes the trouble to name a surface quiet precisely because it is convincing rather than because it is stupid. It is written that they healed the hurt slightly, saying peace when there was none, which treats the mistake as an understandable one worth warning about, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a caution rather than a charge.

You have been given an absence of evidence and you read it as evidence of absence, and the passage names that gap out loud. Jeremiah 6 puts the word peace over a place where nothing had actually been examined, and the Holy Spirit is what turns an ancient warning into a plain useful thought about a driveway in July.

Why a quiet is so persuasive

Here is the mechanism, and once a person sees it they see it everywhere.

An unresolved thing costs something to hold. Not much. A little, every day. And the mind, being a decent steward, is always looking for permission to put it down.

A silence is the cheapest permission available. It requires no phone call, no money, no conversation, and no appointment. It arrives free, and it arrives looking exactly like good news, and it lets a man put a thing down that he has been carrying since the twenty sixth of May.

Of course he took it. Anybody would take it.

And the second thing, which is subtler. Once he had told his wife it had sorted itself out, the sentence acquired a second job. Now revisiting it means revising something he said out loud to somebody he loves. That is a small cost, but it is a real one, and it is added to every day.

You were never intended to build a conclusion out of a quiet, and the written word treats a proper examination as the ordinary thing rather than the exceptional one. Jeremiah names the healing that is done slightly, which implies a healing that is not, and the Spirit of God is what makes the thorough thing available without shame attached.

And here is the half I want to hand you gently, because I think it is the part that stung when his brother went quiet.

Nothing in those two weeks was dishonest. He did not lie to his wife. He believed it. The whole thing was constructed out of relief, which is the most sincere material there is, and sincerity is not the same as accuracy, and a man can be entirely honest and entirely wrong in the same breath.

You have not deceived anybody, and no part of Scripture treats an honest man's mistaken relief as a moral failure. It is written that the Lord knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is Psalm 103 describing what He takes into account, and His Spirit is what makes that a place to stand rather than an excuse to use.
