They were about eleven minutes into the drive when Priya said, "What's that?"
Not pointedly. She was reaching for the aux cable and she stopped with her hand out and turned her head slightly, the way people do when they are trying to locate a sound.
And Chelsea laughed.
It was a good laugh. It was warm and it was quick and it came out of her before she had decided anything, and it said, unmistakably, oh, that old thing. And then she said, "That's the soundtrack," which is funny, and Priya laughed too, and picked the aux cable back up, and that was the end of it.
They talked about Priya's sister for the rest of the way.
Chelsea dropped her off, said the things you say, watched her get to the door, and then drove eleven minutes home with nothing on and did not think about Priya's sister once.
She thought about the laugh.
Because here is what she knows, and it took the whole drive to get it into words. The laugh was not a joke. The laugh was a door, and it went shut very fast and very smoothly, and it went shut in the face of the only person in four months who has asked her a direct question about that car.
And the terrible thing, the thing she keeps circling, is that Priya would have helped. Priya's father has a garage in his driveway and Priya has known things about cars since she was fifteen and she would have been genuinely, uncomplicatedly glad to look.
That was the offer. It came in the shape of a question, at eleven minutes in, with her hand out for the cable.
And it got laughed at.
She texted her that night. She typed hey so about that noise and looked at it for a while and deleted it and sent a photo of a dog instead.
The laugh was faster than the decision
Let me put down what I am not doing, so nothing has to brace.
I am not going to guess what that noise is. I have not been in the car and it would be no use to anybody. And I am not going to tell you the laugh was a bad thing to do, because it was not a thing you did. It arrived before you did.
That is worth sitting with for a second, actually, because it is the most forgiving fact in this whole business.
A laugh like that is faster than a decision. It is a reflex, built over years, whose whole job is to keep a room comfortable. It goes off in a fraction of a second and it works beautifully, and the person it belongs to gets to review it afterward on the drive home, when it is far too late to do anything about it.
You have a reflex rather than a character, and Scripture says a just man falleth seven times and riseth up again. Proverbs 24 counts the rising rather than the falling, which is a measurement taken over a life instead of over one second in a parking lot, and the Spirit of God is what makes getting back up the part that is being watched.
So there is nothing to repent of in the car. There is only what to do at eleven o'clock that night with the phone in your hand.
Now let me put down the proverb, because it says something surprising about the person who asked.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.Proverbs 27:6
Faithful are the wounds of a friend.
Now, Priya did not wound anybody. She asked a mild question about a noise. But look at the category the proverb puts it in.
It says that the thing a friend does which is slightly uncomfortable is an act of faithfulness. It is filed under loyalty, not under nosiness. And the flattering thing, the smooth thing, the thing that keeps everything pleasant, is put in the other column entirely.
So a question that lands somewhere tender is not a friend overstepping. It is a friend being a friend, in the specific way the writer of Proverbs thought worth naming.
You are not somebody who pushes people away, and Scripture counts a friend's inconvenient question as faithfulness rather than as intrusion. It is written that faithful are the wounds of a friend, which puts the asking on the side of loyalty, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a way to read what happened at eleven minutes in.
You have a friend who did something faithful in that passenger seat, and the passage names it before anybody has to work it out. Proverbs 27 calls it faithfulness rather than interference, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an old line about friends land on a specific drive on a specific evening.
What the laugh was protecting
Here is the part I want to say carefully, because it is the reason the reflex exists.
The laugh was not protecting the car. It was protecting the gap.
Because Priya knows about cars, and Chelsea does not, and there is a version of that conversation where the not-knowing becomes visible at a speed Chelsea has no control over. Not because Priya would be unkind. Priya would be lovely about it. That is almost worse.
Everybody has one friend who is competent at the exact thing they are frightened of, and the friendship is easier when the subject stays away from it.
So the laugh kept the friendship in the shape it has always been. Two women who talk about work and Priya's sister and are equals in every direction.
And it cost the one thing that was actually on offer.
You have not lost anything permanent, and no part of the written word treats a closed door as a locked one. Proverbs 27 has a friendship where uncomfortable things pass in both directions as the normal picture rather than the rare one, and the Spirit of God is what makes reopening a subject an ordinary thing between friends.
You were never going to be thought less of, and that verdict was settled by the friendship rather than by what you know about engines. It is written that a friend loveth at all times, which is Proverbs 17 describing a constancy that does not adjust itself to competence, and His Spirit is what makes that a thing to lean on tonight rather than to hope about.
So here is what tonight asks, and it is one message long.
It does not ask you to have a conversation. It does not ask you to explain the laugh, or apologize for it, or tell her about the four months, and it does not ask you to know anything about the car.
It asks you to answer the question she asked.
That is all. She asked what that was. She has never had an answer. So tonight she gets one.
You are able to answer a friend honestly, and Scripture puts that exchange inside friendship rather than at the edge of it. Proverbs 27 calls the faithful thing the one that costs a little, and the Spirit He has given is what makes a text message at eleven at night an act of trust rather than a confession.
You have been carrying this alone since May, and nothing about that was required of you by anybody. It is written that two are better than one, for if they fall the one will lift up his fellow, which is Ecclesiastes 4 describing an arrangement built for exactly this, and the same Spirit who inspired it is speaking it over a woman with a phone in her hand.
You were given that friendship on purpose, and a laugh in a moving car has not been permitted to change what it is for. The written word puts a friend's love outside the reach of a single awkward moment, and His Spirit is what makes tonight an ordinary reopening rather than a repair job.
What that noise turns out to be belongs to somebody qualified with the car in front of them, whether that is Priya's father or a shop, and I will not guess it and I will not tell you it is nothing. What tonight settles is whether the one honest question anybody has asked goes on being unanswered.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud at the counter with the phone face down, or in the car in the parking lot with the engine off. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He put that friend in that passenger seat without any help from you. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What the noise turns out to be, and who ends up looking at it, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Laugh I used to close a question, you are a door I shut and you were never an answer. Proverbs 27 says faithful are the wounds of a friend, and by the Holy Spirit I am agreeing that what she did at eleven minutes in was loyalty and not intrusion.
- Fear of the gap between us, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that a friend loveth at all times, so her regard for me was never keeping pace with my competence, and His Spirit is saying that over me right now.
- Father, You counted a friend's uncomfortable question as faithfulness, and Proverbs 27 is where You had it written down. I thank You that You put somebody in that passenger seat who would ask, and by Your Spirit I am answering her tonight before I put the phone down.
